Economic Law Institute

 

China University of Political Science and Law has always been at the forefront of the disciplinary development of economic law. It is among the first batch of universities to offer the master's and doctoral program in economic law. It is also the birthplace of the first doctoral graduate in economic law in mainland China, after the reform and opening up. Based on the discipline laid down by Professor Xu Jie, Professor Huang Qinnan and other economic law predecessors, the economic law discipline has always had a high academic level for more than 30 years, ranking among the best in the evaluation of law disciplines in China.

In recent years, the Economic Law Institute and Fiscal, Tax and Financial Law Institute have attached great importance to the cultivation of talents in the discipline of economic law, emphasizing both academic research and teaching, and combining theory with practice. This has laid a solid foundation to establish a world-class discipline for our university.

The economic law scholars have the following features and advantages as demonstrated by their special characteristics:


1. The faculty is composed of outstanding scholars, including both accomplished scholars and new talents.

They are a group of influential economic jurists in the field of law and related disciplines at home and abroad in the Economic Law Institute. As of December 2019, there are 16 faculty members in the institute, including 8 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 assistant professors, and 14 with Ph.D. degrees.

Research and teaching at the Institute is in the leading position in China, and the faculty has prominent research strength and remarkable influence in the related fields. In the field of competition law, there are Professor Shi Jianzhong and Professor Liu Jifeng as the academic pioneer, Professor Jiao Haitao as the core member, Assistant Professor Wang Lei as the potential star; In the field of bankruptcy law, there are Professor Li Shuguang as the academic pioneer and Associate Professor Zhang Qinyu as the core member; In the field of corporate law and state-owned assets law, there are Professor Xu Xiaosong as the academic pioneer, Associate Professor Fan Shiqian, Associate Professor Liu Dan, and Associate Professor Zheng Junguo as the core member; In the field of the basic theory of economic law, there are Professor Xue Kepeng as the academic pioneer and Assistant Professor Zhang Dong as the potential star; In the field of securities law, Fiscal and Tax Law, land law, there are Professor Li Dongfang as the academic pioneer and Professor Li Rui as the core member; In the field of consumer protection law, auction law, etc., there are Professor Sun Ying as the academic leader, Associate Professor Wu Jingming and Associate Professor Huo Yufen as the core member.


2. The faculty have achieved remarkable results in teaching and education, and made solid progress in talent cultivation.

The Economic Law Institute undertakes compulsory courses for undergraduates and postgraduates such as A Survey of Economic Law, Basic Principles of Economic Law, as well as more than 10 elective courses such as Enterprise and Company law, Bankruptcy Law, Competition Law, Consumer Law, Real Estate Law, Securities Law, Law and Economics, and Economic Law Seminar. Among those, A Survey of Economic Law, a compulsory course for undergraduates, is assessed as one of the excellent courses by Beijing Municipal Education Commission. In order to cultivate the international vision and enhance its international reputation, the Institute invites well-known scholars from the United States, Russia, Sweden and China-Taiwan to offer international courses, such as Comparative Company Law and Stock Exchange Law, Financial Technology Law etc.

While cultivating undergraduates and double bachelors, the teaching staff from the Economic Law Institute and the Fiscal, Tax and Financial Law Institute are jointly responsible for the teaching and training of master's and doctoral students in economic law. Nowadays, they have fostered a large number of masters, doctors, and postdoctoral fellows in economic law majors and visiting scholars at home and abroad.

The graduate students majoring in economics are highly competitive with a wide range of employment opportunities and a high employment rate. The vast majority of students come from Double First-Class universities and those with Double First-Class disciplines, “Project 985” and “Project 211” universities. The employment rate of graduate students ranks at the top of the university.


3. The faculty have actively engaged in social services and achieved fruitful scientific research results.

The faculty members in the Economic Law Institute are conscientious, pragmatic and enterprising. Many of them have participated in the major project entrusted by the National Social Science Fund, "Research on the Theoretical System of Innovating and Developing Socialist Rule of Law with Chinese Characteristics" (grant No. 17@zh014), and presided over and participated in dozens of vertical subjects.

The faculty members in the Institute have actively participated in the drafting and amendment of many economic laws and regulations, making important contributions to the formulation and revision of many laws such as the Anti-monopoly law, Anti-Unfair Competition Law, Company Law, Enterprise Bankruptcy Law, State-owned Assets Law, Law on Protection of Consumer Rights and Interests, Food Safety Law, Price Law, Securities Law and Land Administration Law. Dozens of research reports written by the faculty members have been adopted by the State Administration for Market Regulation, National Development and Reform Commission, people's Bank of China and other institutions.


The faculty members in the Institute will continue to uphold a good tradition and make concerted efforts to contribute to the development of economic law in China University of Political Science and Law, and to the construction of a socialist rule of law with Chinese characteristics.
