International Seminar on "New Developments of China's Civil Code from the Perspective of Comparative Law: Interpretation and Application of the Book on Personality Rights" Successfully Held

From 18 to 19 June 2021, the International Seminar on "New Developments of the China’s Civil Code from the Perspective of Comparative Law: Interpretation and Application of the Book on Personality Rights", jointly organized by the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, CUPL, and the German Agency of International Cooperation(GIZ) Sino-German Legal Cooperation Programme was held simultaneously offline and online. Scholars and students from Cologne University, Konstanz University, Dresden University of Technology, German Agency of International Cooperation, Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law participated in this seminar. The offline venue of the conference was located on the Xueyuan Road campus of China University of Political Science and Law.

Prof. Dr. Li Yongjun, Professor of Law from the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, CUPL and Vice Chairman of China Civil Law Society, and Dr. Marco Haase, Director of the Sino-German Legal Cooperation Programme (GIZ), co-chaired the seminar on June 18.

The first speaker was Prof. Dr. Zhu Hu from Renmin University of China Law School. Prof. Zhu was Member of Drafting Group of the Legislative Affairs Commission of the NPC Standing Committee. He gave a speech on “Related Issues of the Legislation of the Book on Personality Rights in Civil Code of the People’s Republic of China”.

The second speaker was Prof. Dr. Astrid Stadler from the University of Konstanz, Germany. Prof. Stadler delivered a speech on “Personality Rights Protection in Chinese and German Law – Protection Scope and Illegality”.

The third speaker was Prof. Dr. Yin Zhiqiang from the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, CUPL. His topic was “Civil Code of the People's Republic of China – A Review of the Book on Personality Rights”.

The fourth speaker was Prof. Dr. Anne Lauber-Rönsberg from the Technische University of Dresden, Germany. Her topic was “The Application and Relevant Regulations of the Book on Personality Rights in Civil Code of the People's Republic of China Focus on the Legal Consequences of the Infringement of Personality Rights”.

In the subsequent discussion, Prof. Dr. Yi Jun and Prof. Dr. Dai Mengyong exchanged views on the understanding of personality rights in each other's country.

The seminar on June 19 was co-chaired by Prof. Dr. Liu Jiaan, Director of the Civil Law Institute, CUPL, and Norbert Feige, Legal advisor of Sino-German Legal Cooperation Programme (GIZ).

The first speaker on June 19 is Assistant Professor Xie Yuanyang from the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, CUPL. His topic was “The Regulations and Developments of Personal Information Protection in the Civil Code of the People's Republic of China”.

The second speaker was Prof. Dr. Anne Lauber-Rönsberg. Her topic was “The Relationship Between Personality Rights and Personal Information Protection in German Law”.

The third speaker was Ph. D. Candidate Li Ding from the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, CUPL. His topic was “The Protection of General Personality Rights by the Book on Personality Rights in the Civil Code of the People's Republic of China - Taking the Civil Protection of Equal Employment Rights as an Example.

The fourth speaker was Prof. Dr. Karl Nikolaus Peifer from the University of Cologne, Germany. His topic was “The Application of Regulations in the Book on Personality Rights in the Civil Code of the People's Republic of China - The Commercialization of Personality Rights”.

Then, Prof. Dr. Xi Zhiguo, Deputy Director of the Civil Law Institute, CUPL, and Prof. Dr. Yu Fei, Dean of the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School, CUPL made comments respectively.


During the discussion, online audiences also actively participated in the seminar, which acted positive interactions in the online and offline venues.


At the closing ceremony, Mr. Norbert Feige and Dean Yu Fei delivered closing speeches on behalf of the GIZ Sino-German Legal Cooperation Project and the Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School of China University of Political Science and Law. At the end of the conference, Professor Dr. Li Yongjun made an academic summary of the seminar. He thanked all parties for their active participation and support, and looked forward to further continuation and deepening of the exchanges between Chinese and German scholars in the future.
