CCELS Signs the Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation with Chonnam National University Law School

On the afternoon of December 13, 2019, Professor Kim Soon Suk, Dean of Chonnam National University Law School and Vice Dean Professor Choi Byung Chun, visited Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School. The two law schools signed the Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation and formally established a cooperative partnership.



Professor Yu Fei, Executive Vice Dean of Civil, Commercial and Economic Law School met the visitors at Xueyuan Road Campus. Professor Yu extended a warm welcome to the visit of Dean Kim Soon Suk, and gave a brief introduction to CCELS including its subjects of law, teaching staff, talent training, and international cooperation and exchanges. Professor Yu hoped that the two law schools would carry out in-depth cooperation in teacher-student exchanges, cooperative research, and co-organization of academic conferences on the basis of the Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation in the future. Dean Kim Soon Suk thanked Dean Yu Fei for his warm reception and provided information on the faculty, curriculum, international development, and facilities of Chonnam National University Law School. He said that the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding on Academic Cooperation would help deepen the friendly cooperation established between the teachers of the two law schools over the years, and is conducive to the establishment and exchange of East Asian legal academic communities.

Also present at the meeting were Professor Wu Rihuan, Director of the CUPL Korean Law Research Institute, Professor Ma Gengxin, Deputy Director of the Commercial Law Institute, and Yan Jingjing, Director of the CCELS Foreign Affairs Office.



Introduction of Chonnam National Universityand its Law School

Chonnam National University, located in Gwangju, Jeollanam-do, was established in 1952. It is a well-known higher education institution in South Korea and the most famous national university in southwestern Korea. As a comprehensive university, Chonnam National University currently has 16 colleges, 11 graduate schools, and 72 research institutes. There are more than 1,200 full-time teachers, more than 27,000 undergraduates, and 5,000 postgraduates.

Chonnam National University (formally known as the “Specialized Law School”) is a well-known law school in South Korea. It has produced many judges, judges of the Constitutional Court, and outstanding lawyers. In 2009, Chonnam National University, approved by the Korean government, became one of the first 25 universities in South Korea to offer an American-style law school. At present, Chonnam National University Law School has become one of the main law schools in Korea that undertakes graduate-level law education. The law school has 43 full-time professors and more than 400 graduate students. Chonnam National University Law School has a law library with a collection of 120,000 books. As well, it also has many research institutes such as the Institute of Law, the Public Interests and Human Rights Law Center, the Trust Law Research Center, the Intellectual Property Law Center, and the Health Law Center and Legal Clinic.
